Middle Road 04:21
Stayed outside so late, to catch the call. Up on the rafters, with the words so tall. Didn't stick with me, just how wrong it all was. Staying outside so late, staying up for that buzz. I see the simple way, I see the middle road. I left the low and wide but I left the high and narrow, too. I stayed in firm, I often broke. I wouldn't call it unequal yoke. But "A kid is a kid", as they try to tell you. And not so much later, it would be a joke. I see the simple way, I see the middle road. I left the low and wide but I left the high and narrow, too. I see the middle road... Some time later, I learnt the why and how. And they'll all call me a foolish heathen now. It's not too hard to feel in luck, when the best falls to you without the dirt and muck. I see the simple way, I see the middle road. I left the low and wide but I left the high and narrow, too.

Photograph 04:20
I love the sun, and you love the past. We were never meant to last. And I headed north, and you headed west, we were in search for the past. And I took your fall, and you took it all. You took away my past. 'Cause I love the sun, and you love the past. We were never meant to last. Take this photograph, 'cause we were never meant to last. You take my sympathy. You take the whole of me. So I had to run, had to run for the sun and leave you behind. And I know I've stung, for what I have done, leaving you in the dark. But how dare you say, that I did it my way. I did it for us. 'Cause I love the sun, and you love the past. We were never meant to last. Take this photograph, 'cause we were never meant to last. You take my sympathy. But you can't take my clarity, hey now. Oh, take this photograph, 'cause we're never meant to last. You take my sympathy. But you'll never take my clarity. Take this photograph, 'cause we were never meant to last. You take my sympathy. You can't take my clarity.

Looking out the window, pulled the curtain to the side. Saw my visage in the undergrowth, destroyed by all that pride. He was a good man. Very tall and content I believe. Wouldn't think anything were off or wrong, except maybe something he was trying to hide. This is an ode to my doppelgänger, you pesky clone of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. This is an ode to my doppelgänger, you pesky clone of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. I can't help feeling jealous of what he is and what he'll be. Like a better version of me. Ahead by a program patch or two, but devoid of human needs. You see, you can't hide away something forever, before it eats you up inside. One can't contain an inner beast, before it breaks and shows who you are... This is an ode to my doppelgänger, you pesky clone of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. You pesky clone of mine. (I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time.) This is an ode to my doppelgänger, you pesky clone of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. ...You pesky friend of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. ...You pesky friend of mine. I'd work on my appearances but I, just don't have the time. You pesky clone of mine.

If you want someone to sing with you, well, you know where I am. If you ever want a guitar man, well, you know where I am. I might not always have the cool to play, but, you know where I am. You know where I am. But if you want to sing a song, then sing a song. You know all the words. And if you want to be with me, just be with me. You know where I am. If you want to sing a song, just sing along, and dance the kitchen all night long. And if you want to dance away, you know you better, you better, get stepping. If you want to sing a song, then sing a song. You know all the words. And if you want to dance away, just dance away. You've got all the moves. And if you want to be with me, just be with me. You know where I am. And if you want to sing a song, just sing a song, and dance the kitchen all night long.

Byetown 03:35
We took our trophies to the river. Looking back, that was a bad plan. But while we may have cursed our future, our names were written in the sand. It'll always rain in December. It'll always snow in May. With all the changing temperature, you'll find a reason to stay. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. It's a pretty little city, oh! And I'll always take you with me. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. I'll always take you with me. It was here, I got my first job. It was here, I found my first love. It was here, I got my first shot. It was here, that I said enough. It was here, we won the cup... No we didn't, but hey, who gives a fuck. Next year, we'll have better luck. We'll be there, right down at the puck drop. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. It's a pretty little city, oh! And I'll always take you with me. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. I'll always take you with me. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. It's a pretty little city, oh, and I'll always take you with me. Welcome to Byetown, welcome to my town. I'll always take you with me. I'll always take you with me, hey! I'll always take you with me.

about

Novelty Citizen are: Jesse Auguste and Vincent Teetsov.

The name 'Novelty Citizen' communicates the identity based connection of the band, where all of our presences in the world rapidly change and morph our sense of who we are. Music with feeling and heart gives belonging during this process.

Jesse, who moved to Toronto from Ottawa, was influenced by the pervasive rhythm and powerful simplicity of contemporary soul music. Vincent, originally from the United States, had developed Novelty Citizen's sound in the preceding years when he lived in the UK and Italy. It was in this time that the musical and thematic foundations were built for their music. Themes like taking a path of balance and growth instead of polarity, or accepting one's course as a relationship ends. The final track, “Byetown”, is a piece written for any home you come to love, for all its good and not so good qualities. In essence, these songs are an affirmation of human faults and the desire to work with that.

Novelty Citizen's self titled EP is the culmination of organic songs, with some songs written by Jesse and some by Vincent, each with their own personal touch. Jesse forms an emotive, musically sophisticated canvas on piano, where Vincent establishes the rhythmic roots of drumming and focused percussion. Added into this is the collaboration of Marcus Sorrentino on bass, who has helped them hone dependable groove.

From this, Novelty Citizen is a compact rhythm section, built out of both dynamic purity and ease. Moreover, it is a celebration of sincerity and reflection in 2018; where their shared love of distinct, earnest vocal melodies is both secure and old, but also youthful and yearning.

Words were written in a way that they might grow with each individual listener and multiply in meaning with decisive melodies. "Novelty Citizen" is their recorded debut together. Through the fruitful creative setting of Toronto today, they crafted nostalgic sounds into a distinct, thoughtful young vibe of the early 21st century.
